What should I do?

What should I do? I don’t have anything to give. I am poor myself.
A voice says, ’’If you have a piece of bread, break it in two
and you both will have enough to eat. ’’

What should I do when I see somebody sad?
Their sadness hurts me so, it breaks my heart.
The voice gently says, ’’Open your arms, hug your fellow being,
be sad together and after a while you will laugh together.’’

What should I do when I see lonely people?
How can I help when I am lonely myself?
The voice talks again, ’’Greet your friend with a smile.
He or she may smile back and while you
smile together you will not feel lonely.’’

What should I do when somebody does not understand life?
How can I help when I don’t understand life myself?
The voice whispers, ’’Tell them what you know,
listen to what they and their friends know.
sooner or later you will understand what
you have to know and the rest doesn’t matter.’’

What should I do when somebody is wandering in the woods
without direction? How can I help when I don’t see the road myself?
The voice answers, ’’Hold each other’s hands and go
until you find a open meadow. From there it will be easier to find your way.’’

What should I do when my heart is full of sorrow and pain?
How should I rid myself of the feeling?
The voice responds, ’’Feel your sorrow and pain in your heart
and every part of your body, smell it, taste it, see it, put your hands on it,
do as you wish but don’t try to rid yourself of it. If you do, it will haunt you
but if you face it, though it will hurt at the moment, it will fade with time.
This way you can feel at ease and make room for happiness.’’
